Topic: Ithaca Ecovillage — a Model for Intentional, Sustainable Living

Located in the beautiful region of New York’s Finger Lakes, EcoVillage at Ithaca has three thriving cohousing neighborhoods. The village features cooperative dining in the common houses, a swimming pond, neighborhood community gardens, hiking trails, play spaces, eighty-five energy efficient homes, a common house with 15 apartments, all in a multigenerational village-scale community.

The pedestrian village is surrounded by woods and open meadows. We have a 10-acre organic fruit and vegetable farm on site that provides produce for residents as well as the wider Ithaca area, and a 5-acre CSA berry farm that has delicious organic u-pick berries. We also host a 10 acre teaching farm, the Groundswell Incubator Farm, which offers support for beginning, low-income farmers.

The goal is to build a replicable model of a cooperative, environmentally sensitive village that can also serve as a demonstration site for teaching principles of sustainability and permaculture.

EcoVillage is located on 170 acres, two miles from downtown Ithaca, and three miles from Cornell University and Ithaca College. Ninety percent of the land is preserved as green space for organic agriculture and wildlife habitat.

We will watch and discuss this video.

18:30 (6:30 pm) - Socialism and Sovereignty Today: Korea w/the People’s Forum

In 1945, the Korean people freed their lands and people from Japanese colonialism, ridding themselves from imperialist pillage and violence. Anti-colonial resistance was militant, with peasants, communists, student movements etc. all taking up the struggle for national liberation. In an effort to destroy the independent socialist construction in Korea, the U.S. divided the country at the 38th parallel, launching a war on the socialist advancement in the north. Since then, Korea’s sovereignty has been constantly under attack, with the attempts of reunification being jeopardized by U.S. imperialist interest and the constant demonization of North Korea. As the US militarily escalates in the region, understanding the Korean struggle for sovereignty and reunification is a vital front in the global anti-imperialist struggle.

Emanating from the relentless pursuit of self-determination in the face of imperialism, resistance and sovereignty are common expressions in Venezuela. The continued interference of the United States in the electoral process is characteristic of the regime change schemes that have been orchestrated to undermine the Bolivarian revolution and the socialist project. Despite numerous attempts to subvert the will of the Venezuelan people and destabilize their country and the region, the people have demonstrated a fortified commitment to defend the revolutionary process and rebuke the U.S.’s attempts at regime change. Venezuela’s resistance is a beacon for nations under similar threats, showcasing the importance of standing firm against external pressures to preserve national integrity and the welfare of its citizens.

This video presentation will be followed by discussion.

Israel has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians over the past five months of its genocide in Gaza, including more than 13,000 children. This really bombing campaign is wiped hospitals, universities, primary schools, and other critical infrastructure off the map, not even sparing tent cities in Rafah to where over 1 million displaced people have fled. Through it all, the Biden administration stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel, supplying the funds and arms required for Israel’s extermination campaign to continue. As international legal action against Israel and its allies mounts, the question has risen whether and how the US and its leaders ought to be brought to justice.

Reading: An Extremely Condensed Summary of Capital

18:30 (06:30 pm) - Course: Strategies and Tactics, the Science of Class Struggle w/The People’s Forum

Module 4: Strategy and Tactics, the Science of Class Struggle
Class: China’s Long March
Date & Time: Tues, April 9, 6:30-8:30PM

In 1934, after a careful assessment of the situation and the advance of the Nationalist forces, Mao Zedong and the First Red Army evacuated their Jiangxi base, strategically breaking through the weakest point of their encirclement. They began their journey westward, embarking on an arduous 6,000-mile trek across numerous mountain ranges and rivers. By 1935, depleted and scarred by losses, the Red Army, with a fraction of its original strength, reached the Yan’an province. There, they regrouped, recovered and bolstered their strength, took on Japanese imperialist aggression, and ultimately, brought about revolution in 1949. This pivotal retreat became known as the Long March, and marked a critical juncture in China’s revolutionary history, a key moment which established Mao as the leader of the Communist party, and shaped the nature of the Red Army as a people’s army.

Description: Throughout American history, Black liberation in the U.S. has taken many forms. The Black Belt Thesis adopted by the Comintern and the Communist Party USA in 1928 was foundational to Black liberation consciousness and the Black Liberation movement more broadly, particularly in the USA in the heart of the empire. Marked by debates on national identity, nationhood, race, and the role of the Communist Party, the Black Belt Thesis is critical to understanding the development of a socialist revolution in the United States.

18:30 (06:30 pm) - Course: Strategies and Tactics, the Science of Class Struggle w/The People’s Forum

Module 4: Strategy and Tactics, the Science of Class Struggle
Class: The Anti-Patriarchal Front
Date & Time: Thurs, April 11, 6:30-8:30PM

Description: Liberation movements in our history have clearly understood that the struggle against patriarchy is central to the struggle and national oppression, and that this struggle must be a key part of our struggle for the transformation of society. Understanding that patriarchy is exacerbated by capitalism and imperialism, national liberation movements took up the anti-patriarchal front as central, and not just in symbolic representation, but through active engagement – women took up arms, organized , and fought for the liberation of their country and the transformation of society. Women’s liberation is indispensable for the realization of a new, democratic, liberated society, and only through deliberate and principled resistance against both national oppression and patriarchy can this transformation be achieved.
