Evening Session

19:00 (07:00 pm) - Film Screening: Il Conformista w/Annika (Donate)

A Screening of Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1970 political drama Il Conformista, followed by a discussion of the films themes, statements, symbolism, and omens.

Based on a 1951 novel of the same name, Il Conformista (The Conformist) chronicles Marcello: an amoral and empty man who becomes a government official under Mussolini’s regime. He adopts fascism as his world-view, basking in his strong-man role. Ultimately he is sent to kill a man who was once a dear friend and mentor to him: an antifascist. As the audience, we will get an illuminating look at how Marcello pursues a life and an image that leaves him unhappy, full of contempt for his beautiful new wide, and does not ease the traumatic memories that perhaps made him a conformist.

Cast includes Jean-Louis Trinignant in the starring role, Stefania Sandrelli, Domnique Sanda, and Enzo Tarascio.

Il Conformisto is not a as visually provocative as Bertolucci’s seminal “Last Tango in Paris,” or “The Dreamers. Nonetheless, the film goes down some dark corridors - child abuse is alluded to, besides the film taking place during WWII in a fascist nation. ś
