Today, October 4th, is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, medieval Christian mystic who is widely beloved across many religious traditions, including Hinduism and Buddhism. To mark the occasion, tonight, we will watch and discuss a video presentation on a well known and inspiring story from his colorful life.
In this talk, Franciscan nun and psychologist, Gabriele Uhlein, explores explores a little-known thirteenth-century peace initiative in the Middle East involving St.Francis of Assisi and the Sufi mystic and Sultan Malek In 1219, during the fifth crusade, Saint Francis was escorted by Muslim soldiers to the sultan. There he met Sufi teachers returned dramatically changed in his relationship to Islam and in his prayer life. Experience this fascinating story as both historical fact and as spiritual allegory. It is the tale of how a quest to be of service can dare us to cross spiritual thresholds, to encounter the fearsome stranger, and find our hearts forever changed.
This presentation was given during a national convention of the Theosophical Society in America in 2013.
