In this interview, Professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat presents an overview of her newest book “Strongmen” and explains how illiberal leaders (like Donald Trump) use corruption, violence, propaganda, and machismo to stay in power, and how resistance to them has unfolded over a century.
Professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat is an historian and authority on the history of fascism.
She is a member of the American Historical Association and professor of history and Italian studies at New York University. She writes about fascism, authoritarianism, propaganda, and democracy protection. She regularly writes for CNN, The Atlantic, and The Huffington Post. Her most recent book published in 2020 is “Strongmen: From Mussolini to the Present”.
