10:30 (10:30 am) - Political Violence and the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election w/The Soufan Center

As the nation approaches a pivotal election, the threat of domestic terrorism and political violence remains a significant concern. Nearly four years after the U.S. Capitol insurrection, societal polarization has only deepened, exacerbated by the spread of mis- and disinformation by state and nonstate actors. This escalating polarization poses an increased risk of violence toward vulnerable communities, including immigrants, Jewish and Muslim communities, and LGBTQ+ individuals, in addition to government officials and law enforcement. Violent extremist groups – such as white supremacists, neo-Nazis, accelerationists, militias, and anarchists – are actively spreading disinformation and conspiracy theories online to promote their propaganda, influence political leaders, and embed their narratives into mainstream political discourse.

Against the backdrop of the upcoming U.S. presidential election, as well as discussions held at the inaugural Global Summit on Terrorism and Political Violence hosted by The Soufan Center (TSC), this TSC webinar aims to examine the political violence threat landscape in the United States in the context of the upcoming presidential election, assess the risk of violence, and explore how state actors and violent extremists are capitalizing on and inflaming societal fissures to promulgate their narratives, advance their own agendas, interfere in the democratic process, and incite followers and others to violence.

AGENDA: Sister Wendy Beckett And The Story of Painting (2 episodes)

Given the emotional turbulence all of us are going through right now as we approach Election Day, I thought it would be good to give our minds a rest and our hearts a lift by bringing that amazing diminutive British “nun historian “ Sister Wendy Beckett back for another enjoyable trip into art history. We will watch two segments from her wildly popular PBS “Story of Painting” series that aired on PBS during the 1990s.

Season 1, Episode 7: Revolution - Sister Wendy Beckett discusses English painting at the time of the Industrial Revolution, looks at art during the French Revolution, and visits Spain for the romantic genius of Goya.

Season 1, Episode 8: Impressions of Light - Sister Wendy Beckett explores the revolutionary art movement of Impressionism that began in Paris including art with a focus on some artwork by its major figures — from Manet to Van Gogh.
