Agenda: “On Tyranny” by Bestselling Author Tony Snyder
Tonight we will continue our series of sessions on the theme of “resistance” as we watch and discuss a lecture by author and acclaimed history professor and Holocaust authority Timothy Snyder” based on his book “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.” He argues that the Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. Snyder warns that we today are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage, Snyder asserts, is that we might learn from their experience.
On Tyranny is a guide to resistance, with invaluable ideas for how we can preserve our freedoms in the uncertain years to come.
His book, written just months before Trump’s first inauguration, has proven to be remarkably prescient about the dangers a Trump presidency presents, and during this second term is enjoying a renewed interest in its contents.
