Agenda: Replacing Neoliberalism with a “Politics of Belonging”
This evening we will watch and discuss an interview conducted by Chris Hedges with George Monbiot about his newest book “The Invisible Doctrine” which traces the hidden rise of neoliberalism—from its 1930s origins by Austrian thinkers in exile, through elite-driven promotion and secretive funding, to its dominance in late 20th-century US and UK politics. He argues that neoliberalism’s core aim is unfettered corporate power rather than true liberalism.
Monbiot provides a vital counter-narrative to neoliberal thought. Drawing upon recent studies that refute the pervasive notion that humans are self-serving individuals by design, he asserts rather that our species is most adept and attuned to cooperation, mutual aid and altruism. Monbiot then calls for a “rewinding of politics” through participatory practices that increase democratic engagement in community and regional politics. Hence a new “politics of belonging” can emerge – a remedy for the vicious spiral of alienation and loneliness we find ourselves mired within.

Although showing film is out of character and against my better judgement, in spite of this, I will be presenting what I feel is a worthy cult classic to while away your time with. Rubin & Ed is a 1991 desert road trip comedy starring Howard Hessman, Crispin Glover and Karen Black. No trailer and no spoilers. Without question, there will be slides. You, like most people, have never seen this film. I promise a treat.
