Agenda: “The Great Turning” — The Transformative Journey from Industrial Growth to a Life-Sustaining Civilization

In our ongoing series of explorations into deep ecology, this evening we will listen to and discuss excerpts from two presentations by Joanna Macy where she discusses her groundbreaking and prophetic work, “The Great Turning,” which deals with the transformation from an industrial growth society to what she considers to be a more sustainable civilization. She begins to outline a theoretical framework for the kind of urgent personal and social change that will be necessary in order for our life on earth to continue.

Joanna Macy PH.D., is an author and teacher, and scholar of Buddhism, systems thinking and deep ecology. She is a respected voice and movements for peace, justice, and ecology, and she enter weaves her scholarship with learnings from six decades of activism. Her wide-ranging work addresses psychological and spiritual issues of the nuclear age, the cultivation of ecological awareness, and the fruitful resonance between Buddhist thought and postmodern science.

Note: If time and interest allows, we will also watch an inspiring 20 minute interview with Joanna Macy and in which she answers an essential question: How can we live our lives fully, with inner peace and courage — and even joy — as we confront a world that is destroying itself?

I would like to invite everyone to join me for the mystery crime/comedy series, Poker Face. A Columbo inspired drama.

A mystery-of-the-week series following Charlie Cale, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road in her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve. Guest stars are plentiful throughout, from Ellen Barkin and Adrien Brody to Luis Guzmán and Chloë Sevigny. An inverted detective series, also known as a “howcatchem” and popularized by “Columbo,” the crime and perpetrator are shown at the beginning of each episode, and follows Charlie as she tries to solve the mystery.
