A course on modern Middle Eastern history was originally scheduled to be taught at Columbia University in Fall 2025. However, as Columbia continues its complicity in covering up the U.S.-Israeli genocide against Palestine and capitulates to the Trump administration at the expense of academic freedom and student rights, Professor Rashid Khalidi found it impossible to teach his course. This segment of the course, entitled A Short Course on Palestine, will now be offered at The People’s Forum, co-sponsored with the Institute for Palestine Studies, making it accessible to the broader public.

20:30-21:30 (8:30 pm) - Spirituality and Activism w/Texas Tom

Tonight’s topic: Two Separate Realities: A Conversation w/ former Evangelical Christian fundamentalist Tim Whitaker

There are two distinct realities in America right now. One was on display at the Charlie Kirk memorial, where God is seen as having picked a side—and if you’re not with them, you’re not on it. In short, this is the religion of Christian Nationalism: the religion of white, Protestant fundamentalism that wants to impose a theocracy.

But then there’s another reality: a broad coalition of followers of Jesus who take seriously the kind of social reform enshrined in the Sermon on the Mount and connect it to today’s social and political challenges. This is a faith rooted in reality: one that is an inclusive, Jesus-centered community that holds space for those marginalized and advocates for systemic change. It’s the religion of Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, César Chávez, and Rev. William J. Barber of the Poor People’s Campaign. Yet the truth is, this second reality—faithfulness to to the radical teachings of Jesus—is not winning — at least not yet.

In his interview with Leigh McGowan (host of Politics Girl), Tom Whitaker (Founder of The New Evangelicals) traces the rise of modern-day Christian Nationalism that has overtaken the GOP and the Trump administration. He offers fresh, accessible, and thought-provoking historical and political connections.

I would like to invite everyone to join me for the mystery crime/comedy series, Poker Face. A Columbo inspired drama.

A mystery-of-the-week series following Charlie Cale, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road in her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve. Guest stars are plentiful throughout, from Ellen Barkin and Adrien Brody to Luis Guzmán and Chloë Sevigny. An inverted detective series, also known as a “howcatchem” and popularized by “Columbo,” the crime and perpetrator are shown at the beginning of each episode, and follows Charlie as she tries to solve the mystery.
