Tonight’s Topic: Are You in Control, or Is Your Brain Controlling You? (Part 2): A Conversation w/ neuroscientist Heather Berlin
What really drives the choices you make—your conscious will, or powerful processes running beneath awareness? In the second hour of our two-part series with neuroscientist Heather Berlin, we’ll dive into the latest research on the subconscious and how it shapes behavior moment to moment. From automaticity and habit loops to the “illusion of control,” we’ll explore how much of life is steered by preconscious brain activity—and when our conscious mind can step in.
Through vivid cases—sleepwalking and parasomnias, anesthesia and the edge of awareness, competitive strategy and game theory—we’ll examine the brain’s hidden playbook and its shortcuts for survival. You’ll leave with practical tools for decision hygiene: how to build a pause between impulse and action, strengthen metacognition, and design environments that help your better intentions win.

A mystery-of-the-week series following Charlie Cale, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road in her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve. Guest stars are plentiful throughout, from Ellen Barkin and Adrien Brody to Luis Guzmán and Chloë Sevigny. An inverted detective series, also known as a “howcatchem” and popularized by “Columbo,” the crime and perpetrator are shown at the beginning of each episode, and follows Charlie as she tries to solve the mystery.
