Agenda: The Story of Howard Thurman (in celebration of Black History Month)

Tonight we’ll be watching and discussing Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story, a documentary that introduces us to a thinker whose quiet depth shaped the civil rights movement. Thurman taught that hope is not optimism but “the remembrance of radiance,” a way of holding light in dark times.

Thurman’s legacy invites us to reconsider what power looks like. He believed that nonviolence was sustained by an inner steadiness, a cultivated depth of spirit. “There is in every person a place of quietness that is the source of strength for the life that is lived in the midst of the turmoil,” he wrote — a truth that continues to speak to anyone laboring for justice in a fractured world. His life suggests that transformation begins not with defeating an enemy, but with discovering one’s own dignity and the humanity we share.

In a moment marked by democratic erosion, rising authoritarianism, and the targeting of vulnerable communities, Thurman’s vision offers a way to stay rooted rather than reactive. This film invites us to consider how inner quiet, moral clarity, and disciplined courage can sustain resistance when so much depends on our ability to stay awake and human.

Tonight‘s session will also include a guided meditation at the end of the evening.

Loosely structured and reliant on character sketches, running gags and many catchphrases, its fast-paced “blackout” style set it apart from traditional sketch series because of the number and relative brevity of its sketches; a typical half-hour TV sketch comedy of the period might have consisted of nine or ten major items, with contrived situations and extended setups, whereas the premiere episode featured 27 sketches in 30 minutes,[1] with some items lasting less than ten seconds and none running longer than three minutes. Its style and presentation influenced many later series such as Little Britain and The Catherine Tate Show.
