Agenda: The Story of Howard Thurman (in celebration of Black History Month)
Tonight we’ll be watching and discussing Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story, a documentary that introduces us to a thinker whose quiet depth shaped the civil rights movement. Thurman taught that hope is not optimism but “the remembrance of radiance,” a way of holding light in dark times.
Thurman’s legacy invites us to reconsider what power looks like. He believed that nonviolence was sustained by an inner steadiness, a cultivated depth of spirit. “There is in every person a place of quietness that is the source of strength for the life that is lived in the midst of the turmoil,” he wrote — a truth that continues to speak to anyone laboring for justice in a fractured world. His life suggests that transformation begins not with defeating an enemy, but with discovering one’s own dignity and the humanity we share.
In a moment marked by democratic erosion, rising authoritarianism, and the targeting of vulnerable communities, Thurman’s vision offers a way to stay rooted rather than reactive. This film invites us to consider how inner quiet, moral clarity, and disciplined courage can sustain resistance when so much depends on our ability to stay awake and human.
Tonight‘s session will also include a guided meditation at the end of the evening.

1 pm - Office Hours 23: The Treason of the Clerics w/Adnan Husain
The intellectuals and intelligentsias, like Noam Chomsky, have been exposed as much as any of the corporate and political elites in the Epstein revelations. What is the role of “the intellectuals”? The “Treason of the Clerics” comes from Julian Benda’s bemoaning of collaborationist intellectuals, the clerics, of society who betray their sacred duty of dispassionate critique. As we know, even that is a mirage in what Gabriel Rockhill calls the Intellectual World War. Who are the intellectuals of practice, the organic and oppositional leaders, in the struggle for liberation instead? Joining me to talk about this as well as the stifling of Cuba, threats on Iran, and other theatres of US empire is Justin Podur, a professor at York University, author of several important books analyzing US empire, and host of the indispensible Anti-Empire Project and corollary Anti-Genocide Project podcasts and video. Office Hours comes at an early afternoon time, 1 pm ET Friday Feb 13th so don’t miss it!
