Tonight’s Topic: White Poverty: How Exposing Myths About Race and Class Can Reconstruct American Democracy

Prominent faith leader Rev. Wm Barber and social activist Jonathan Wilson-Hargrove co-authored a newly released book in which they argue that poverty is much more deeply entrenched in America than we think. One of the most pernicious and persistent myths in the United States is the association of Black skin with poverty. Though there are forty million more poor white people than Black people, most Americans, both Republicans and Democrats, continue to think of poverty―along with issues like welfare, unemployment, and food stamps―as solely a Black problem. Why is this so? What are the historical causes? And what are the political consequences that result?

Analyzing what has changed since the 1930s, when the face of American poverty was white, Barber, along with Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, addresses white poverty as a hugely neglected subject that just might provide the key to mitigating racism and bringing together tens of millions of working class and impoverished Americans.

Tonight we will watch and discuss the moderated interview of these two authors.

On June 19, 1865, slaves in Galveston, Texas received the news of their long-awaited freedom—the liberation that promised dreams no longer out of reach for future Black generations in America. Juneteenth was born, but the struggles of the newly freed persisted, often at the hands of White Christians manipulating scripture to justify their oppressive actions. Ironically, Black populations resiliently clung to that same faith as their lifeline to liberty and justice. With the insightful expertise of genealogists, historians, pastors, activists, and living ancestors of Texas slaves, the documentary JUNETEENTH: FAITH & FREEDOM explores the history of our nation’s newest federal holiday and the complicated intersection of slavery, racism, and faith.

Wallis says that it is time to call out genuine Christianity and reject White Christian Nationalism–inviting all who can be persuaded to reject and help dismantle a false gospel that propagates white supremacy and autocracy. He states that we need to embrace authentic faith and help those who are oblivious, stuck, and captive to the ideology and idolatry of White Christian Nationalism that is leading us to such great danger. The interview is conducted by Daily Beast columnist Wajahat Ali who is himself a Muslim.

Jim Wallis wrote his new book not only for Christians but for all faith traditions, and even those with no faith at all. When we see a civic promotion of fear, hate, and violence for the trajectory of our politics, we need a civic faith of love, healing, and hope to defeat it. And that must involve all of us-religious or not.
