18:30 (06:30 pm) - The Shape of Things to Come w/CinemaTAC

Things to Come (also known as Shape of Things to Come and in promotional material as H. G. Wells' Things to Come) is a 1936 British science fiction film produced by Alexander Korda, directed by William Cameron Menzies, and written by H. G. Wells.

H. G. Wells conceived his treatment as “a new story” meant to display the “social and political forces and possibilities” that he had outlined in his 1933 book The Shape of Things to Come, a work he considered less a novel than a “discussion” in fictional form that presented itself as the notes of a 22nd-century diplomat.

20:30-21:30 (08:30 pm) - Spirituality and Activism w/Texas Tom

Agenda: Discussion of the PBS American Experience Documentary The Gilded Age — Part II

Professor Jon will ONCE AGAIN be hosting tonight’s session and leading the discussion.

What topic could be more apropos as we find ourselves on the edge of Trump’s entering the Oval Office and we enter into a full-fledged oligarchic dictatorship? As Jon noted in my discussion with him, this history lesson will be a good reminder that our nation has been through this before. Maybe, just maybe, those of us on the side of the resistance can face this future with a little more wisdom and knowledge that will help us do our part in steering our nation back to an even brighter, more democratic and more equitable future.

Ken Adam was responsible for designing the rumpus room in Goldfinger (1964) and the volcano base in You Only Live Twice (1967) - at the time, the most ambitious set in film history. Another major achievement was the supertanker set in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). Aside from Bond he also came up with the set design for Dr Strangelove which Steven Spielberg called “the best set that’s ever been designed”. Oh, and he also won two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction.

We’ll watch the documentary and talk a bit about how his work has influenced my design process.

This week’s reading is a mixed media collection of the following:

  1. Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night
  2. Baudelaire’s prose poem The Eyes of the Poor (click on page 43)
  3. The song How Beautiful You Are by The Cure (lyrics)

There may or may not be a connection between the the painting and the prose poem, however they were contemporary with each other, but they can definitely viewed together while thinking about the Hausmannization of central Paris they relate to. The Cure to my knowledge has never credited Baudelaire, which is odd because it is so obviously inspired by it.
