Dr. Lara Sheehi, radical psychoanalyst and author w/Stephen Sheehi of Psychoanalysis under Occupation, joins Adnan for a discussion of what our friends at Resistance is Fertile, @resistanceisfertile7, call the psychological support front for the resistance. How do we understand resistance to colonialism psychically? How can we build on Fanon’s theories to better empower resistance? What practices can support and sustain militancy in the resistance and its broad support? What is psychic militancy? How do we deal with the feelings and experience of shock, horror, despondency, despair that demobilize us in the face of brutal war crimes and genocide in Gaza; the inculcated feelings of inevitability of the corrupt, oppressive system of neoliberal capitalism that inculcate passivity, isolation, atomization and anomie; the psychological warfare of consumer capitalism and its media or avoid the deceits of liberal normativity, all of which suppress our empowerment and action? How can psychic militancy prevent us from adjusting to a bankrupt reality but rather to see the opportunities for change, action, and solidarity as a meaningful struggle individually and collectively for a just world?

Tonight’s S&A Agenda: The Big Myth: How American Business Taught Us to Loath Government and Love the Free Market

Many Americans distrust “big government” and place their faith in “the free market.” Yet history shows that government has often solve problems created by markets, with major successes, like Social Security and the Internet. In this interview, author Naomi Areskes recount the history of how American business leaders intervene in politics, popular culture, the educational system, religious life, and academic discourse to promote market fundamentalism.

Tonight’s discussion will be hosted by our good friend Prof Jon (@Jim Bob). Many thanks for his stepping in! And gratitude to @joeuamai for suggesting this topic!

About Naomi Oreskes: She is a world-renowned earth scientist, historian and public speaker, author of the best-selling book, Merchants of Doubt (2010) and a leading voice on the role of science in society, the reality of anthropogenic climate change, and the role of disinformation in blocking climate action.

She has written or co-authored nine books, including The Collapse of Western Civilization, Why Trust Science?, and Science on a Mission. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Times (London), and she penned the introduction to the Melville House edition of Laudato Si, Pope Francis’s climate encyclical.

Tonight’s Agenda: A Celebration of the Revolutionary Thought of James Baldwin

Tonight we will watch and discuss a powerful documentary created to honor James Baldwin who has been called GOD’S REVOLUTIONARY VOICE: a literary, philosophical, cultural, artistic, and ideological genius, whose ideas on the revolutionary remaking of world humanity continue to exert their power.

“To Fulfill the Unfulfilled, To Answer the Unanswered: The Revolutionary James Baldwin,” the title of this film, is a documentary produced by The Saturday Free School for Philosophy and Black Liberation. Premiered on August 2, 2024—Baldwin’s 100th birth anniversary—it explores Baldwin’s revolutionary evolution and positions him as a philosopher inseparable from Martin Luther King Jr. and the Black Freedom Movement. The premiere was part of a three-day celebration in Philadelphia, featuring an Afro-Asiatic Peace Concert and the exhibit Love & Revolution: James Baldwin Speaks to Our Time.

Amid today’s national crises of violence, poverty, and meaning, Baldwin’s work offers us a path toward healing and transformation. His writings reflect both the possibility and necessity of the birth of a new American people and challenge us to complete the unfinished democratic and emancipatory struggle.

A mystery-of-the-week series following Charlie Cale, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road in her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve. Guest stars are plentiful throughout, from Ellen Barkin and Adrien Brody to Luis Guzmán and Chloë Sevigny. An inverted detective series, also known as a “howcatchem” and popularized by “Columbo,” the crime and perpetrator are shown at the beginning of each episode, and follows Charlie as she tries to solve the mystery.
