She recounts the story of how American business leaders intervened in politics, popular culture, the educational system, religious life, and academic discourse to promote market fundamentalism.

Hidden San Francisco is a guidebook like no other. Structured around the four major themes of ecology, labour, transit and dissent, Chris Carlsson peels back the layers of the city’s history to reveal a storied past: behind old walls and gleaming glass facades lurk former industries, secret music and poetry venues, forgotten terrorist bombings, and much more. Carlsson also delves into the Bay Area’s long prehistory, examining the region’s geography and the lives of its indigenous inhabitants before the 1849 Gold Rush changed everything.

This second edition includes new tours on the wild and natural parts of San Francisco that most tourists never visit, from Glen Canyon to Sutro Forest, as well as a new themed walk on the Summer of Love. There is also a new introduction examining the devastating impact of the pandemic, as well as a mini-history of tech in the city, from the Gold Rush to AI.

She begins to outline a theoretical framework for the kind of urgent personal and social change that will be necessary in order for our life on earth to continue.

Joanna Macy PH.D., is an author and teacher, and scholar of Buddhism, systems thinking and deep ecology. She is a respected voice and movements for peace, justice, and ecology, and she enter weaves her scholarship with learnings from six decades of activism. Her wide-ranging work addresses psychological and spiritual issues of the nuclear age, the cultivation of ecological awareness, and the fruitful resonance between Buddhist thought and postmodern science.

Note: If time and interest allows, we will also watch an inspiring 20 minute interview with Joanna Macy and in which she answers an essential question: How can we live our lives fully, with inner peace and courage — and even joy — as we confront a world that is destroying itself?

Agenda: The Sacred Depths of Nature: Exploring the Interface of Science, Spirituality and Religion with Ursula Goodenough

How do we merge the best of science with an earth-based spirituality that focuses our attention on the thriving of the web of life?

Tonight we will watch and discuss an interview with Professor Ursula Goodenough, author of the book, The Sacred Depths of Nature, which examines cosmology, evolution, and cell biology, celebrates the mystery and wonder of being alive, and suggests that this orientation might serve as the basis for “planetary ethic” that draws from both science and religion. And on the basis of this concept, in 2014, Ursula was part of the founding of the Religious Naturalists Association. And now in 2023, the second, updated edition, that looks into epigenetics and pandemics and generally updates both the science and the moving reflections that each scientific section evokes.

Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass, said of her book: “At once expansive and intimate, empirical and immanent, analytical and intuitive, material and spiritual, science and poetry get to dance joyfully together in these pages.”

Ursula Goodenough is a Professor of Biology Emerita at Washington University. She has discussed religious naturalism in essays, college classes, and as part of blogs and television and radio productions. She participated in conversations with the Dalai Lama sponsored by the Mind and Life Institute.

I would like to invite everyone to join me for the mystery crime/comedy series, Poker Face. A Columbo inspired drama.

A mystery-of-the-week series following Charlie Cale, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road in her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve. Guest stars are plentiful throughout, from Ellen Barkin and Adrien Brody to Luis Guzmán and Chloë Sevigny. An inverted detective series, also known as a “howcatchem” and popularized by “Columbo,” the crime and perpetrator are shown at the beginning of each episode, and follows Charlie as she tries to solve the mystery.
