11:00 (11:00 am) - Talk: Commodification of Nature, Informal Economy, and Labour Precarity in Northern Mexico w/Christian Zlolniski

In northern Mexico, the extraction of beach pebbles serves as the primary source of income for many Indigenous workers who constitute an invisible workforce employed in the informal economy. The importation of natural resources from Mexico to address water scarcity and arid landscapes at the time of climate change in the United States has fostered new forms of labour precarity in the local communities where this resource is extracted. Christian Zlolniski analyses the relationship between environmental exploitation and labour precarity in the ‘green economy.’ Geographical isolation, unregulated workspaces, and natural environments intersect to exacerbate labour precarity in this extractive industry. As the beach rocks move along this commodity chain, there is a gradual alienation of nature, wherein the labour and environmental impacts of these extractive activities are obscured. The result is a transfiguration process that delineates a transnational geography of violence against nature as well as the bodies of the workers employed in this sector.

Tonight’s Agenda: A Deep Dive into the Psychology of Trump and His Followers

Tonight we will watch and discuss two shorter videos that provide a window into the dark inner world of Trump and its nexus with Trumpism - the psychology of his following of true believers.

The Psychology of Trumpism with Dan Partland: Part I Part II

Anthony Davis talks to Dan Partland, director of #UNTRUTH - a new documentary where mental health experts analyze disinformation, false narratives, and untruths in American media and culture. It examines how profit-driven enablers and power-seeking politicians create divisions threatening democracy.

What explains Donald Trump’s enduring appeal among his supporters? What drives the intense emotional connection that his most passionate followers feel with the former — and possibly next — president? This question has bedeviled pundits, political scientists, journalists, historians and other observers for the last decade, leading many to the realization that the normal categories of political analysis fall short when it comes to this phenomenon.

This video essay is drawn from McAdams’ New Lines Magazine article The Mass Psychology of Trumpism.

In these 75 years, the people of China have taken the future into their own hands. Forging a new path forward meant overcoming legacies of war and imperialist exploitation, to embark on a process that would transform their country, and ultimately, the world.

The study of this revolutionary process raises pressing questions for those of us in struggle today. Together, we will study this revolutionary process, what led to victory in 1949, the various phases and changes since then, and China’s relationships with both the U.S. and the Third World. Tonight’S Agenda: Trump and Maga as Anti-Christ

Tonight we will watch and discuss an interview on The Analysis News Network (run by Paul Jay) with Matthew Fox, a prominent theologian and spiritual writer. While lecturing in Orvieto, Italy, this year, Matthew Fox encountered the powerful fresco of the Antichrist painted in the Orvieto Cathedral at the outset of the 16th century by Luca Signorelli. At first glance, the impressive fresco in San Brizio’s Chapel in the Orvieto Cathedral appears to show Christ addressing a crowd – but after closer inspection, one realizes that the main figure is, in fact, the Antichrist, with a demon speaking into his left ear. inspired artist Michelangelo and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud to produce some of their greatest works. It also inspired American theologian and priest Matthew Fox to write his new book Trump & The MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ: A Handbook for the 2024 Election. In part 1, Fox argues that the archetype applies to the darker sides of MAGA and its Christian-nationalist backers.
