Agenda: Progressive Host of “The Majority Report” Sam Seder Debates Twenty Trump Supporters

Grab your popcorn and favorite beverage because tonight we will watch and discuss the recent 90 minute appearance of Sam Seder on the YouTube Jubilee channel called “Surround” where he debated a gathering of young MAGA voters. It will be instructive for us to not only hear and try and understand the viewpoints of these young people as they try and argue their right wing views but for us also to critically assess together the quality of the progressive arguments Sam offers in return during each encounter. Where did Sam hit home runs and where did his arguments fall short or possibly go awry? Were there any additional or alternative arguments that could have or should have been offered?

The following claims were debated

  1. Trump’s attack on DEI hides his real goal of giving corporations more power.
  2. Unless you’re a billionaire, religious fundamentalist, or a xenophobic nationalist, voting for Trump was a mistake.
  3. The GOP will destroy Social Security on healthcare. Trump‘s policies make the rich richer and the working class poorer.
  4. Abortion is immoral and should not be legal.

Agenda: “On Tyranny” by Bestselling Author Tony Snyder

Tonight we will continue our series of sessions on the theme of “resistance” as we watch and discuss a lecture by author and acclaimed history professor and Holocaust authority Timothy Snyder” based on his book “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.” He argues that the Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. Snyder warns that we today are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage, Snyder asserts, is that we might learn from their experience.

On Tyranny is a guide to resistance, with invaluable ideas for how we can preserve our freedoms in the uncertain years to come.

His book, written just months before Trump’s first inauguration, has proven to be remarkably prescient about the dangers a Trump presidency presents, and during this second term is enjoying a renewed interest in its contents.

Additionally, as a Muslim and Sufi, Adnan will share how his faith influences his views and personal response to this crisis, especially during the sacred time of Ramadan. We will follow his presentation with a Q&A period and community discussion.

Adnan will actually be joining our zoom at 8pm Central. Beginning at 7:30pm, we will first take some time to first remember and share our fond memories about our dear, dear friend , Nancy Shaw Mathisen, who tragically died a few days ago.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian and philosopher, and was executed because if his involvement in the resistance to Hitler, developed his theory of stupidity during World War II in an effort to try and understand and explain why so many German citizens embraced Nazi philosophy. He believed that stupidity, as he defined it, is more dangerous than evil because it is impervious to reason and cannot be countered by protests or force.

Bonhoeffer’s insights remain relevant today, especially in the context of misinformation and polarized societies. His theory encourages us to reflect on the nature of irrational behavior and the importance of fostering critical thinking and independent thought.

This evening we will watch a short video and read an article that will help us flesh out the particulars of Bonhoeffer’s theory of stupidity and explore together its implications for today’s situation as we strive to confront the a challenges we face in the Trump Era.
