22:00 (10:00 pm) - Introduction to Deep Ecology w/“Texas Tom” Webber

All of us are aware that we have reached a critical juncture in which we are in the midst of ecological collapse and that the old paradigm of “conservation” or even the quest for reducing our carbon footprint is inadequate to the task of avoiding a dystopian future. I think we all know that we need a dramatically new paradigm in order to meet the challenges we face.

Deep Ecology is an environmental philosophy that promotes the inherent worth of all living beings regardless of their instrumental utility to human needs, and the restructuring of modern human societies in accordance with such ideas. In this presentation I would like to offer an introduction to Deep Ecology which I will argue offers us the necessary philosophical and moral framework upon which any concerete solutions for saving our planet must be based.
