Saturday, 25 December 2021

00:00 (00:00 am) - An Adult Reading of the Christmas Story w/“Texas Tom” Webber

During my two hour segment, drawing on the best of biblical scholarship, I will unpack for you the historical, socio-political and economic realities that serve as the framework for understanding of the liberative theology found in the story of Jesus’ birth. The story of Jesus’ birth found in my presentation will not resemble the tame, saccharine Precious Moments nativity scenes you may have grown up with. Hopefully rather, by the conclusion of my presentation, you will be able to hear the original Christmas story with new eyes of appreciation. And hopefully you will be inspired to dig even deeper in it the meaning and significance of this story for yourself.

As a bonus, I will likely perform an original Christmas tune of mine to accompany my presentation.

Please have a New Testament Bible on hand for my presentation. Ideally I would like you to have (re)read the two Infancy Narratives found in the first two chapters of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, paying particularly to the political tensions that thread their way throughout your reading. In addition, try to read this story from the viewpoint of one who is poor and marginalized. And, of course, bring your questions with you.
