Tonight’s Topic: Can Reports Of Near Death Experiences Illuminate Our Understanding Of Deep Mystical States?

Since the publication of “Life After Life” in 1975, research into Near-Death Experiences has flourished across disciplines, opening new doors into the study of consciousness. Today, the conversation is shifting: instead of asking only whether NDEs are ‘real,’ we might also ask how they illuminate timeless dimensions of spiritual experience. This interview if presentation by Fr. Vincent Pizzuto takes up that challenge by exploring the Trappist monk Thomas Merton’s evocative description of quietud sabrosa—a ‘delicious tranquility’—and considers its uncanny resonance with reports from those who have journeyed to the threshold of death. By drawing on an idealist (as opposed to physicalist) model of consciousness, he suggests that NDEs not only expand our scientific understanding of consciousness but also deepen our insight into the interior unfolding of contemplative states, offering a bridge between modern research and perennial wisdom.

About Fr. Vincent Pizzuto, Phd: He Father Vincent Pizzuto, Ph.D. is Professor of New Testament Studies and Christian Mysticism at the Jesuit University of San Francisco and is an Episcopalian priest. He is currently working on his third book project in which he studies the nature of consciousness and its importance for spirituality.

This lecture in commemoration of Islamic History Month-October 2025 in Canada is about the development of knowledge and science during the period of cultural efflorescence under the Abbasid Caliphate in the 9-11th centuries, a culture of learning that I call “Islamicate” because it was multi-religious and multi-ethnic in character under Muslim patronage. My focus will be an early text called Kitab adab al-tabib or The Conduct of the Physician that some consider to have formulated the first systematic understanding of medical ethics, including research ethics. This will give us a window into both the scientific, cultural, but also ethical environment of the diverse Islamicate society of the era that has many lessons for our own.

How much of what you experience is the world itself—and how much is your brain’s best guess? Join neuroscientist Heather Berlin for an accessible, eye-opening exploration of perception, attention, and memory. In the first hour of this two-part series, we’ll unpack what cutting-edge research reveals about how the brain constructs reality, and why your mind sometimes misleads you with illusions, blind spots, and confident mistakes.

From survival “shortcuts” and predictive processing to change blindness and the limits of multitasking, we’ll examine the tricks your brain uses to keep you alive—and how those same tricks can distort what you think you saw, heard, and remember. Come curious; leave with practical insights for navigating a world where certainty often outpaces accuracy.
