My focus will be an early text called Kitab adab al-tabib or The Conduct of the Physician that some consider to have formulated the first systematic understanding of medical ethics, including research ethics. This will give us a window into both the scientific, cultural, but also ethical environment of the diverse Islamicate society of the era that has many lessons for our own.

Join neuroscientist Heather Berlin for an accessible, eye-opening exploration of perception, attention, and memory. In the first hour of this two-part series, we’ll unpack what cutting-edge research reveals about how the brain constructs reality, and why your mind sometimes misleads you with illusions, blind spots, and confident mistakes.

From survival “shortcuts” and predictive processing to change blindness and the limits of multitasking, we’ll examine the tricks your brain uses to keep you alive—and how those same tricks can distort what you think you saw, heard, and remember. Come curious; leave with practical insights for navigating a world where certainty often outpaces accuracy.

20:30-21:30 (8:30 pm) - Spirituality and Activism w/Texas Tom

Tonight’s topic: Two Separate Realities: A Conversation w/ former Evangelical Christian fundamentalist Tim Whitaker

There are two distinct realities in America right now. One was on display at the Charlie Kirk memorial, where God is seen as having picked a side—and if you’re not with them, you’re not on it. In short, this is the religion of Christian Nationalism: the religion of white, Protestant fundamentalism that wants to impose a theocracy.

But then there’s another reality: a broad coalition of followers of Jesus who take seriously the kind of social reform enshrined in the Sermon on the Mount and connect it to today’s social and political challenges. This is a faith rooted in reality: one that is an inclusive, Jesus-centered community that holds space for those marginalized and advocates for systemic change. It’s the religion of Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, César Chávez, and Rev. William J. Barber of the Poor People’s Campaign. Yet the truth is, this second reality—faithfulness to to the radical teachings of Jesus—is not winning — at least not yet.

In his interview with Leigh McGowan (host of Politics Girl), Tom Whitaker (Founder of The New Evangelicals) traces the rise of modern-day Christian Nationalism that has overtaken the GOP and the Trump administration. He offers fresh, accessible, and thought-provoking historical and political connections.

Tonight’s Topic: The Role Of Decentralized Media In An Era Of Facism

Tonight we will be treated to a presentation and opportunity to chat with my daughter, Christine, who recently gave a talk (remotely) entitled “Protocols and Purpose in a Global Democratic Crisis” at the Berlin Fediverse Day 2025 conference, a gathering of decentralized social networking implementers, users, and communities.

Christine Lemmer-Webber is a well renowned architect of decentralized social networking technology: social networks controlled by people, not corporations. In this talk she discusses the role of decentralized media in an era of fascism and media capture. What happens when community media distribution is all we have left? How do we keep it alive and keep activists safe in their communication?

After we watch a video of her presentation, Christine will stick around for a Q&A with those attending the zoom.

Christine Lemmer-Webber is an American software engineer, best known for her lead authorship and co-editorship of ActivityPub. She is currently the Executive Director at Spritely Institute. The Spritely Institute is a nonprofit organization developing decentralized networking technologies that empower users to control their online identities and relationships. Christine was also the lead author and co-editor of the 2018 ActivityPub standard, a W3C standard for decentralized federated social networking.

22:00 (10 pm) - CinemaTAC: Poker Face w/Travis

I would like to invite everyone to join me for the mystery crime/comedy series, Poker Face. A Columbo inspired drama.

A mystery-of-the-week series following Charlie Cale, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road in her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve. Guest stars are plentiful throughout, from Ellen Barkin and Adrien Brody to Luis Guzmán and Chloë Sevigny. An inverted detective series, also known as a “howcatchem” and popularized by “Columbo,” the crime and perpetrator are shown at the beginning of each episode, and follows Charlie as she tries to solve the mystery.

Tonight we focus on the 1919 - 1920 Palmer Raids, under the Wilson Administration. The First World War has been over for a year, and the modern era plows ahead. But so does fear and paranoia. In America, the Red Scare goes into overdrive.

If you are not familiar with America 1919 - 1920 please join me for my segment focusing on the 2nd Wilson Admin, the rise of Unions, racial violence, suppression of free speech and the FIRST RED Scare. You will learn as I have that Stephen Miller, Trump and Steve Bannon are just reading American history books to craft this current fanatical tide of fear, Nativism, Xenophobia and mass deportations. My presentation will run about 90 minutes overlapping into Bring the News.

17:00 (5 pm) - Office Hours w/Professor Adnan Husain

Office Hours #9 - Why History, How History?: Studying the Past for a Just Future

The radical academy is open and the professor is in! In this solo edition of Office Hours w/Prof. Adnan Husain, I will discuss approaches to history, particularly premodern history and its relevance despite the distance in time to understanding our contemporary world. When and how does Europe become “Europe”? How does the picture change when we take a global perspective? We will talk about non-Western histories and theories, Ibn Khaldun’s social and historical thought, how to engage in a dialectical materialist study of historical culture, religion, and ideas. How do historical narratives and their underlying assumptions pattern national, ethno-religious, and other identities? How can we study the past to envision and organize for a just, equal, sustainable future? The field is vast and interesting, so come with your questions, topics, and comment and learn to be guerrilla historians! I’m really looking forward to discussion with you all about the past, our present and possible futures. Audience engagement will be crucial so post your questions early!
