We will be watching and discussing a powerful new documentary by Robert Greenwald that exposes Israel’s war on journalism through the lives of Palestinian reporters killed in Gaza. Since October 7, 2023, at least 178 journalists have been killed—more than in both World Wars combined.

The film tells the stories of Belal Jadallah, a beloved media advocate killed after being denied safe passage; Heba Al-Abadla, a radio host and women’s rights activist killed alongside her daughter and family; and Ismail al-Ghoul, a fearless Al Jazeera journalist killed in a targeted strike. It also features Sabrine Al-Abadla, Heba’s sister, who lost 57 relatives in a single airstrike and now bravely shares her story from under siege.

As the world looks away, we must not stay silent. Journalism is not a crime. Telling the truth should not be a death sentence.

Agenda: Replacing Neoliberalism with a “Politics of Belonging”

This evening we will watch and discuss an interview conducted by Chris Hedges with George Monbiot about his newest book “The Invisible Doctrine” which traces the hidden rise of neoliberalism—from its 1930s origins by Austrian thinkers in exile, through elite-driven promotion and secretive funding, to its dominance in late 20th-century US and UK politics. He argues that neoliberalism’s core aim is unfettered corporate power rather than true liberalism.

Monbiot provides a vital counter-narrative to neoliberal thought. Drawing upon recent studies that refute the pervasive notion that humans are self-serving individuals by design, he asserts rather that our species is most adept and attuned to cooperation, mutual aid and altruism. Monbiot then calls for a “rewinding of politics” through participatory practices that increase democratic engagement in community and regional politics. Hence a new “politics of belonging” can emerge – a remedy for the vicious spiral of alienation and loneliness we find ourselves mired within.

22:00 (10 pm) - Cinematac: Poker Face w/Travis

I would like to invite everyone to join me for the mystery crime/comedy series, Poker Face. A Columbo inspired drama.

A mystery-of-the-week series following Charlie Cale, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road in her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve. Guest stars are plentiful throughout, from Ellen Barkin and Adrien Brody to Luis Guzmán and Chloë Sevigny. An inverted detective series, also known as a “howcatchem” and popularized by “Columbo,” the crime and perpetrator are shown at the beginning of each episode, and follows Charlie as she tries to solve the mystery.
