Agenda: Bridging the Political Divide: A Psychological Approach to Compassionate Dialogue

For our next zoom gathering, we’ll be watching, discuss and critique the insightful video, “How to Reach a Trump Supporter | A Psychoanalytic Guide.” This video can be a powerful resource for our group, as it reframes political polarization not as a stubborn intellectual divide, but as an emotional and deeply human experience. By drawing on psychoanalytic principles, it seeks to offer us a practical, compassionate roadmap for navigating those difficult, often painful conversations across the political or ideological divide that many of us face in our families and communities . Instead of relying on arguments that only build walls, the video teaches us how to listen with curiosity, validate the underlying feelings of others without compromising our own values, and set healthy boundaries with grace. It serves as a beautiful guide for anyone hoping to heal fractures in our society by focusing on our shared humanity rather than the divisive slogans that keep us apart.

We will also offer the chance for all of us attending to discuss our own struggles and trying to engage in such conversations and sure how we might apply some of these new insights into our everyday interactions with others.

I’m happy to announce that Prof Jon Bick will join me in cohosting tonight’s session.
