Let’s set the mood for Adnan’s upcoming reading by taking a guided tour around the old medinah of Valencía focusing on the Islamic-era casbah walls. Map of the old city.

A Tour of the old Arab wall of Valencía

Valencía, Spain is rich with nearly 2000 years of continuous occupation by the Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and Christians. In this tour, we will explore the remaining vestiges of the Muslim era and Arab wall located in the El Carmen neighborhood of Valencía. The Spanish Muslims, or Moors, occupied Valencía for almost 900 years: ruling the land for over 500 years (718-1238AD) and living as a subjugated people for nearly 400 years (1238-1609AD). This tour will provide a very, very brief summary of Muslim occupation that lasted for nearly a millennium.

We will start the tour at the outskirts of the ancient city, located in present-day El Carmen, and learn about the importance of the River Turia and the irrigation ditches that channel water from the river. We will talk about the organization of the Arab city, known then as Balansiya, and the impact that Muslim social structure had on the labyrinth of streets and alleyways that exists today. We will continue our tour along the remaining portions of the massive wall that measures more than 2.25 meters in depth and interspersed with lookout towers that measure more than 14 meters in height. Finally, we will enter the area known as the Morería or the Muslim ghetto where, after the Christian conquest by Jaime I of Aragon in 1238 AD, the Valencían Moors lived for over three centuries until their expulsion from Spain in 1609.

16:30 (04:30 pm) - Gratitude Month w/Valley Vox Theatre

Valley Vox Theatre honors Gratitude Month (trailer) by celebrating solidarity with a screening of the 1954 film Salt of the Earth with special guest Professor Mary Anne Cummings. In the film, Mexican-American workers at New Mexico’s Empire Zinc mine protest the unsafe work conditions and unequal wages compared to their Anglo counterparts. When an injunction stops the men from protesting, however, the gender roles are reversed, and women find themselves on the picket lines while the men stay at home. IMDB, Rotten Tomaters (100%)
