Agenda: The Psychology of Trumpism - A Deep Dive

During tonight’s Zoom gathering, we will watch and discuss the new YouTube video “The Psychology of Trumpism.” All of us have struggled at times to have constructive conversations with followers of Trump, and perhaps those conversations can become more fruitful if we approach them with a more empathetic posture — one grounded in understanding rather than debate.

This video presentation will help us explore how powerful emotional currents shape political identity and why certain narratives resonate so deeply with millions. In relation to Trump’s followers, we’ll consider questions such as: What psychological needs are activated in moments of fear, uncertainty, or cultural change? How do stories of strength, grievance, and belonging create a sense of meaning? Why do some people feel energized by transgressive behavior while others feel threatened by it? What happens when political identity becomes fused with personal identity? How do social media and misinformation intensify emotional reactions? We’ll close with a conversation on how understanding these dynamics can help us discern a path forward — both in our individual and collective engagements with followers of Trump and in shaping policy directions that more effectively address the needs of Trump’s supporters.
